A not-too-sweet Sweet & Sour Pork with fresh pineapple and peppers made simple with a slow cooker.

Sweet & Sour Pork

  • Servings: 1 cup
  • Yield: 8 servings
  • Prep Time: 15 min
  • Cooking Time: 6 hr

Ingredients

  • 1.5 - 2 lb boneless pork sirloin roast
  • 1 Tbs oil
  • 1 Tbs flour
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 red bell peppers, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • ½ fresh pineapple chopped
  • 4 ounces water
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 Tbs ginger paste
  • 2 Tbs soy sauce
  • 2 Tbs agave nectar
  • ½ cup brown rice
  • 2 Tbs rice wine vinegar

Preparation

  1. Cut the pork roast into 2 inch cubes and toss with flour. Sear the pork cubes in a skillet over high heat in 1 Tbs oil just to get some browning on the outside of each.
  2. Add the pork and all other ingredients into the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6 hours. *If you prefer your peppers less soft, wait to add them until the last hour of cooking.

Have you ever been to a restaurant and ordered Sweet & Sour Pork to be disappointed that it's too sweet? Like, syrupy, cloying, straight sugar sweet? I've been there and wanted to make a slow-cooker dish that celebrated all of the best parts of this Asian inspired dish (fork-tender pork, rich zesty sauce, bright peppers and pineapple) without the insane sugar rush. Yes, there's still brown sugar to bring this sauce together, but it's just the right amount to make this dinner sweet, sour and, most importantly, savory.

Join me in the kitchen as I make this with my junior sous chef and get the official taste test:
