We all love to take road trips in the summer with the kids, but have you considered all of the fun you can also have on a winter trip? There are so many things to see and do in the winter, and this can be a great time to travel. After all, with the exception of the holiday season, fewer people travel in the winter time, so there isn’t nearly as much traffic on the roads to have to deal with. If you are interested in the idea of taking your kids on a winter road trip or vacation, here are some tips to help make it loads of fun for everyone.

  • Pack the Right Clothing – You never know what the conditions are going to be like in the winter. The forecast could call for sun, but you end up in the middle of a huge snow storm. So, if you are going to be traveling in the winter months, be prepared. Make sure that you have the right clothing packed, including heavy coats and boots. While in the car, the kids can wear lighter clothing that is going to be more comfortable.
  • Pack Books and Toys – Younger kids tend to become bored on long car rides, and they are more interested in the destination than what they can see along the way. Make sure that you pack plenty of books, as well as small toys and games that they can play with while you are on the road. That way, you won’t have to listen to repeated rounds of, “are we there yet”. The kids will be entertained and quiet, and you can enjoy a peaceful trip.
  • Be Prepared for Emergencies – It is always a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car, especially if you are going to be traveling in the winter. “This kit should include such items as candles, tin cans (to use as candle holders), kitty litter (for traction if you get stuck), blankets, and pillows (to help stay warm until help arrives). Also, have a first-aid kit on board, as well as a bag with plenty of non-perishable snacks, bottled water, etc. Don’t forget a few flashlights too,” suggests an expert from eAutoLease.
  • Plan the Music – Everyone has their own favorite music, and chances are, your kids are going to fight over what is being played on the car stereo. Be prepared, and create playlists for everyone in the family, so each person gets a chance to listen to their favorite music on the trip. Switch it up every half hour so everyone gets their turn, and eliminate a lot of fighting. Older kids can also use their phones or iPods to listen to their own music without bothering anyone else.
  • Plan Lots of Activities – There are so many winter activities for families to enjoy, and you can pack a lot of things into a weekend getaway. For instance, if everyone loves to ski, take them on a ski weekend. But, find other things to do as well, so no one ends up becoming bored. Plan some activities that the whole family can do together. Don’t forget about the free activities, such as winter hikes and snowball fights.
  • Take Plenty of Photos – You are making some great memories with your family that are going to last a lifetime. Preserve those memories by taking loads of photos while you are on all family vacations, including winter road trips. Make sure that you have your battery charger with you, as well as a backup battery and extra memory cards so you are sure to never miss any of the best moments.
