For this Father's Day, I want to honor all of those amazing and dedicated dads that are a parent to a child with special needs -- and one of those dads is my husband. We have an amazing little boy with autism. He is mostly nonverbal, but my husband and our son don't need words to communicate the love and special bond that they have together. I am proud of my husband for many things, but I am most proud of the dad -- and person -- he has become in raising our son. His unconditional love and devotion to our son is remarkable. Last weekend, instead of taking our son to Little League or soccer like all of the other dads we know, my husband took my son to the store to ride an escalator (my son is not able to participate in sports because of his neurological issues). The motion of riding an escalator is very soothing to my son, and he will just close his eyes and smile and will ride it for hours! When they came home, I asked my husband if he ever missed out or felt sad that he is not able to participate in sports with our son (my husband was a college basketball player) and he replied that "No, not for a day, because just seeing Brody <our son> smile is enough to make me happy." I am so proud of the man and dad he has become and I would love for dads like my husband to be especially honored on this Father's Day.
