Overworked, overwhelmed, but overjoyed with this new season of my life

Let me preface this by saying I haven't slept a full night since July 2, 2018, when I delivered my second son. And honestly, I'm not OK with that. I am a woman who cherished her sleep. I never outgrew the need to sleep more than eight hours that I've been plagued with since I was teenager in the late 90s. Every day, I start out with a "to-do" list of both short and long-term goals. By noon, I have misplaced the paper. That's when I pick my 4-year-old son up from pre-school and start emailing myself "to-do" list reminders. Well, I've got a confession to make. Those reminder emails typically never get opened because my baby needs to eat. My baby needs to get changed. My older son then has a tantrum because he never napped, but it's too late to nap now because if he does, he will not go back to sleep until 2 a.m. That's a habit we can't enter into.

After all, I'm already up at that hour feeding the newborn. Geez, I'm even stressed out as I write this. We all have this endless "to-do" list every day. Seriously, I feel like I'm in a hamster wheel and I never get anything done. What I'm about to say might shock you, but the only thing on your "to-list" today should be to tear that list up. That's right. shred it up and throw into the recycling bin like party confetti. We are all chasing that brass ring every day from the moment we open our eyes. The pressure is relentless. Be an amazing parent, but not too amazing. I mean, the kids need structure and discipline. Eat better. Hit spin class after dropping your kid off at school. Don't forget the peanut-free cupcakes you promised you'd bring to your son's class this week for Grandparent's Day. Do the dishes, the laundry—don't forget to call your friend who's nursing a broken heart and totally doesn't get why you're not available to go to happy hour tonight. Don't forget to pick up your husband's suit from the dry cleaner. He has a business trip this weekend and don't miss your article deadline. Shoot, your editor wanted that piece on Thursday. It's Wednesday. Still totally doable. Jack has soccer practice at 4 p.m. and darn it, you forgot to pick up those peanut free cupcakes.

Literally, the list goes on and on. And none of us ever get a break from it. It's exhausting! Simply getting through another day of these endless tasks seems like a porthole to hell. My glass isn't half full. It's totally empty. In fact, I don't even know where my glass is! I'm pretty sure my kid smashed it. There is only one solution to not feeling like you're always doing too much. YOU have to be the one to give yourself a break from it. Give yourself one day, once in a while, where you do nothing. I know this is easier said than done. But if you just take one day a month to not accomplish anything on a "to-do" list...boom! You just accomplished everything on your list. Setting realistic short and long-term goals is the key to success. When we achieve smaller goals, it allows us to go on to larger ones.

You'll soon realize, your heart and your cup are overflowing with blessings. Now, that you've accomplished everything on your "to-do" list today, let's get this party started!
