We have discovered that preparation, routine and consistency are key when getting our little ones to sleep well and through the night. We think that having an established bedtime routine is super important for getting our kids excited for bedtime and ready for a good sleep. Different things have worked for us at different times, but here are our favorite true and tried bedtime habits that have helped us establish a fun and functional 3-step bedtime routine!

We always start our bedtime routine at the same time every night. We give ourselves enough time and start to wind down early in the evening. Sunset can be a good visual cue for the kids since they’ve yet to learn how to tell time, this can help them anticipate bedtime and mentally prepare on their own.

Step One: A Warm Bath The first thing we usually do is start out with bath time to help the kids wind down, relax and get the day's dirt washed away! The kids will play and do a bit of slashing around in the tub, but we try to keep their activities calm. We’ll sing songs together and encourage them to talk about their day. (Tip: We’re fans of JOHNSON’S® baby BEDTIME® bubble bath & wash. The scent is divine!)

Step Two: A Gentle Massage We like to then keep our little ones’ skin moisturized by applying a mild and gentle baby lotion. It’s also the perfect time to continue building the bond! (Note: This is a true skill to keep our kids still!)

Step Three: A Quiet Activity Now, it’s story time.

The kids LOVE reading! They have their favorite books that we read every night, but we’re always looking to add to their book collection. We’re strong proponents of reading physical books instead of reading from a tablet, mobile or other electronic device; we’ve found that our little ones are easily distracted if they see their apps or video games. We end our story time with our prayers and practice being thankful.

Lastly, we tuck them in, give them goodnight kisses and hope they stay in bed!

Please remember that there are no hard-and-fast rules for bedtime, and every child is different. What's important is to develop a routine that works for your family -- and to stick with it!
