At age twenty-one, Leslie Hsu Oh loses both her mother and brother to liver cancer caused by hepatitis B. This double death fuels the passion Leslie brings to her writing and photography.
Leslie Hsu Oh’s award-winning writing and photography has appeared or is forthcoming in Alaska Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, First Alaskans Magazine, Fourth Genre , Kids These Days!, Native Peoples Magazine, Novel Adventures, Rosebud Magazine, Smithsonian, Stoneboat, Under the Sun, Washington Post and elsewhere. "Between the Lines,” an essay adapted from this memoir,” was named among the distinguished stories of the year by Best American Essays. “ Woosh teen ayxa’a! Daa naaytee! We paddle together, imitating our ancestors ” won the 2014 Writer’s Digest Writing Competition. “ Sit' Tlein: The Story of Hubbard Glacier's Spirit and Indigenous Knowledge of Tlingit Seal-Hunting Practices ” won 2015 Alaska Press Club’s 1st place in Best Environmental Reporting.
