Toys.

What’s the purpose of a toy? To entertain, educate, keep a toddler busy while mom or dad can start dinner? In the intention of the question, my husband and I were brainstorming our favorite “toys”. And, being parents of older teens (thus, older than most of you) our answers were “Legos” and “Lincoln logs”. Together, we reveled in the experience of creating something out of basically, blocks.

It begged the question… building, creating… that’s the toy that will stand the test of time. And then, synchronically, we learned about “Blocks for Tots” in Seattle, WA. Bob Mitchell makes blocks from wood- all shapes and sizes to give to the homeless children in the community. The children are given a set of homemade blocks in a purple bag with their name on it. Despite their homelessness, they have a gift that can travel with them on their journey. The documented stories are amazing. The kids use their blocks to make their own amazing discoveries about construction and space. Some, build the home for which they desire. Yet, they all are using their imagination to find Hope.
