As parents, we strive to take an active role in our children's lives. Being an involved parent allows us to guide our children and provide them with the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives as adults.
Just to be clear: being an active parent doesn't mean being a helicopter parent. We want to take an active role in their lives, but we don't want to go overboard with control and limit their experiences.
Here are three ways to take a healthy active role in your child's life.
1. Get More Involved in Their Education
Education plays an important role in your child's life. It can open doors that would otherwise be closed, and it can also help your children find their passions.
Some parents take a passive role when it comes to education. They may demand that their children maintain a certain standard, but they fail to help them reach this standard. Education and your role in it is a personal decision, and there is no right or wrong answer here. However, it can be helpful to provide guidance and assistance with homework, projects and other assignments.
Assistance and guidance does not mean doing the assignments for them. Rather, it means helping them find solutions or create things on their own.
Take an interest in what your children are learning. Learn alongside them. The more you know about the subject, the better the guidance and assistance you can offer.
2. Talk and Listen
In a world of text messages and social media, it's becoming increasingly challenging to hold a face-to-face conversation with children and teens. But talking and listening to your children will help you understand what's going on in their lives.
Maintaining an open line of communication is crucial when raising a child, especially when they reach those difficult teenage years. They should feel as if you are someone they can talk to and confide in.
Make it a priority to have open and meaningful conversations with your children. More importantly, make sure that you are listening during these conversations. Listening is often more important than adding your own input.
3. Be a Part of the Things They Love
One simple way to be a more active parent is to just be a part of the things they love. If your child loves sports, consider coaching her team. It helps if you already have knowledge and experience with the sport, but you can also take youth coaching classes online to prepare you for the role.
If your child has taken an interest in a particular hobby, maybe you can participate or in the very least, encourage your child to progress and practice the hobby.
Taking an interest in your child's interests, talking and listening, and getting more involved in your child's education can go a long way in helping you take a more active role in your child's life. Just remember that being involved doesn't mean taking complete control or always having to be in your child's life. Kids also need their own space to learn more about themselves and grow as people.
