I remember being excited for back to school time when I was younger but I know that’s not always the case for kids. It can be a rough transition from summer to school, especially for kids who might get to spend more time with family and friends during the summer. It can be hard to give that up and get back into the learning groove. But as a parent, I’m trying to make it as easy as I can for my kids!

1. FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE

You’ll always hear me talk about being positive. If your child starts worrying, then try and get their mind off the worries. Acknowledge their concerns but also help them focus on the positive. The beauty of a new school year is that it can be a fresh start! But that doesn’t mean that old memories and worries won’t creep up. Just try to stay focused on all the possibilities!

2. CREATE A TIMELINE

You can help your child get ready for back to school by creating a timeline for your child. Let them know when school will be starting and what you’ll be doing as a family to prepare for this upcoming exciting time. You can use a calendar and create a countdown to build excitement!

3. PICK YOUR BATTLES

Some issues are going to come up around back to school time and they might have you wanting to pull your hair out. Whether your child is excited or anxious, remember that your main focus is to help your child prepare and deal with back to school. You might have to choose with battles you deal with and which ones you learn to let go. Take some time to figure out what is most important and remember that your child is dealing with a ton of emotions too!

4. SCHOOL BEHAVIOR

There are definitely expectations for behavior at school that might not be exactly like what is expected at home. Even if your child has been to school before, make sure to review the expectations! You don't want them to be unprepared! And it can be a bit of a shock on the first day of school if a child has never been to school in the past.

So while it’s easy to focus on the new school supplies and the excitement of new clothes, it’s important to touch base with your kids about how they’re feeling (even if their young) and remind them of what is expected once school starts and make it a great year!
