It's really easy to think that your travel days are over when you have kids but I promise that traveling with a baby is not that hard!! In fact, I think it is one of the easier times to travel with kids - it's definitely easier with a baby than a toddler.
It can get trickier when they have set opinions and don't want to stay still. A baby that just needs mom and dad to be happy is much simpler!
It does, however, take more preparation, planning and a fair bit more packing. Here's some tips we have learned from travelling long and short haul many times with our little ones. Our two year old has already been to over 20 countries!
1. Ring the airline and request the bassinet
It's so much easier when you can get the bassinet for your baby. Not only might they sleep better but you have somewhere to put them. It's hard if you have to hold a baby for a whole flight especially if you are traveling alone or have other kids.
Some airlines will charge you for this and it's worth paying the extra for the bassinet seat.
2. Be prepared with milk, water and food always
Always have whatever your baby needs on you. If they are eating solids, don't assume you'll have easy access to suitable food anywhere including on planes and in restaurants. We always have a couple of baby food packs on us at all times.
It's the same for drinks. We always have water and formula. At airports, we buy water after security. Airlines should give you water but they can't always get it as soon as you need it so always have your own.
3. Take a carrier and a stroller
The age old question - should you take a carrier or a stroller?
If you can, take both. They are both useful. A stroller can be great for naps when you are out and about or if baby is getting heavy.
A carrier can make things really easy especially if you are navigating small spaces or going somewhere like Europe where there are lots of stairs and cobblestone streets.
If you can just take one, pick the carrier.
4. Have more clothes than you think you will need
Babies are messy! You will need more spare clothes than you think. I have also learned the hard way to not be so quick to change them when they make a bit of mess - they will probably just make more ten minutes later anyway.
5. Think about varying your routine
When traveling with a baby, don't be afraid to vary their routine a little. We often add an extra nap during the day when they are young so we can go out a bit later at night and actually eat dinner out at a normal hour. It usually works well.
