Mother's Day is coming up, and now is the time to start planning a special day for mom. Whether you're a mom yourself or planning to do something for a mom in your life, there are ample opportunities to make the day special.

Mother's Day is May 13, and a few of the ways kids can get involved in the celebration are:

1. Kids Can Help Make Breakfast

I remember my mom always asking for breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, and it's the perfect way to spoil mom. Some moms like lunch or dinner better, but this recommendation can easily go for any meal.

The secret is to have your little helper get involved.

Kids can help make the meal, too. This is not only a lesson in giving back, but kids will learn how to cook, too. Once the kids get into their teens, they'll have an easier time cooking all on their own.

2. Celebrate as a True Mothers' Day

The day can be a collaborative celebration where kids, even if you have kids of your own, spend the day together as a mother. This means spending time with your mom, mother-in-law and any other special mother in your life.

It's not uncommon to see a family of daughters, all of which are parents, spend the day together spoiling themselves.

My brother's wife spends every Mother's Day with her two girls who are also mothers. They'll often spend the day out at the:

• Spa

• Nail salon

• Movies

• Restaurant

They'll also buy each other flowers or gift baskets.

It's an activity that brings all three of them together to celebrate the day as one. Younger kids can also be included in the activities as we'll see below.

3. Crafts Work Great, Too

Crafty moms love to see their kids take up similar hobbies. What's more thoughtful than buying a gift? Making one. Kids can make crafts for mom, along with the help of dad or a significant other, of course.

There are a lot of easy craft options that mom is sure to love, such as:

• Bath salts

• Flower crafts

• Jewelry

There are a lot of crafts for kids that mom is sure to love.

4. A Day Out With Mom

Is mom the busy type who never has time to enjoy time with the kids? Well, what better day to spend the day out than Mother's Day? You can bring mom:

• Out to eat

• To the movies

• Out to the spa

• To the park

• To a museum

Find the activities that she will like the best – it's her day.

If you do go to the park, bring along a picnic basket and make a day out of it. You'll find that a little food and a day out in nature will bring a smile to her face.

5. Make Memory Boxes

Memory boxes offer a great way to remember the day and everything that mom has done for her kids. The goal is to buy a tin from a craft store, decorate the box and have your kids write down all of their favorite memories with mom.

Place the memories, all separate, into the memory box.

You can also print out digital pictures or adorn the outside of the tin with pictures. You'll be making a scrapbook of memories that fit into the memory box. Mom will then go through the memories remembering all of the fun times that she had with her children.
