As a mom, it's a scary thought to know that your baby will come into contact with many harmful chemicals and substances throughout their life.
But it's important to remember that they don’t have to come in contact with them inside your home and on your watch.
Having my two little kids exposed to chemicals is one of my biggest concerns. And that’s why I try to make an effort to go as "green" as possible when it concerns anything and everything my family puts on their skin, in their body, and in our home environment.
And you can go green too, by following these five easy tips I've laid out below.
You’ll be sure to avoid exposing your baby to unnecessary and dangerous chemicals throughout their day!
1. Make Your Own Baby Wipes
You may think that wipes that are labeled "sensitive" are chemical free, but they are not. In fact, some of the most popular brands have a higher than average hazard rating!
You can certainly buy wipes that are labeled 100% organic, but the bad news is that they are on the expensive side. While some moms argue that they will go to any length and pay any amount to keep their baby safe, it’s just not a reality for many moms who are on a budget.
So, consider making your own wipes.
All you need is paper towels, a plastic container, and some good old natural cleaning agents like pure aloe vera, organic liquid soap, and some witch hazel.
There are dozens of sites that boast wipe recipes, so search online and whip up a concoction that sounds savory and safe to you!
2. Use an Organic Crib Mattress
I have to admit that I'm a sucker for a good, organic crib mattress. Your baby spends most of their day in the crib napping, so it's not a bad idea to give them something that doesn’t get coated with icky chemicals.
Consider trying an organic foam mattress or one that is 100% cotton. Organic mattresses can come in a foam or spring form, and both can be fire retardant, without being coated in fire retardant chemicals. I have
a guide on my website about crib mattresses, including organic ones, if you want to check it out.
3. Make Your Own Baby Food
Lots of baby food contains preservatives, which helps them have a longer shelf life. Many of the fruits also used in jarred baby foods are doused with dangerous pesticides, leaving lots of residue behind during the food making process.
While there are many great brands of organic baby food on the shelf and ones that I personally use, I don’t think anything tastes better or fresher than making your own (plus you have total peace of mind).
You can grow your own veggies and fruits, or pick up an organic selection at the store. All you need is a
baby food maker, some containers, a little time, and a lot of creativity when it comes to making your own blends.
This way, you personally know each and every ingredient that goes into each container you prepare for every meal.
4. Pass on DEET
DEET is a harmful chemical that is often found in bug repellents. Believe it or not, it has been linked with neurological damage and even seizures when used overtime.
While skipping the repellent itself is not wise because mosquitoes and ticks transmit many deadly diseases,
there are alternatives!
Be sure to always use a bug spray that is composed of natural ingredients or essential oils. Both will do the same job, but will keep your baby safe.
5. Use Organic Bedding and Swaddles
Again, your baby is going to spend the majority of their time when very small in their crib.
If you plan on purchasing an organic crib mattress, you can also purchase organic bedding and even
organic swaddles. Your baby’s skin directly sits on these items, so choose wisely when it comes to fabrics.
Keeping your baby safe is your top priority. One thing you can do is go green in your home, with dietary choices, and objects that come in contact with your little one.
Consider these 5 tips to begin making some major swaps if you haven’t done so already!
