Spring is here, which means the kids are getting antsy and want to spend more time outside. Parks allow kids to burn off energy and socialize with some friends, but the backyard can be just as fun.
Use these five ideas to turn your backyard into a fun play space for the kids.
1. Build a Chalkboard Wall
If you love the idea of a chalkboard wall but don't want one inside of the house, an outdoor wall is a great option. This gives kids the opportunity to draw, write, play games and let their imaginations soar.
These fun walls also keep chalk off of your sidewalk and walkways.
There are a few ways to bring this idea to life.
Build a giant outdoor chalkboard. HeyThereHome has a great tutorial on how to do this.
Install a chalkboard on the fence.
No matter which option you go with, make sure that you place the board somewhere your kids will actually use it.
2. Make Your Own Zip Line
Zip lining is fun for kids of all ages – and now you can make one right in your own backyard. For this to work, you'll need a fenced in yard, but the process is surprisingly simple.
All you'll need is some strong rope, something to use as a handle and a pulley. It's important to choose a rope that isn't too stretchy and can a handle the weight of your child. HowDoesShe has a great tutorial on how to pull this project together.
3. Give Kids Their Own Space to Relax
Adults have their own place to relax – why not give your kids their own space? You don't necessarily need to go out and buy new outdoor furniture, but you can set up an area with child picnic tables or even build a bench.
Vintage Revivals offers a great tutorial on how to build an outdoor reading nook for kids.
4. Build a Treehouse
What child doesn't want a treehouse? If you have a tree in your yard, you may be able to build a traditional treehouse.
But even if you don't have a tree, your kids can still enjoy having their own space to hang out and play. With some time and inexpensive materials, you can build your own backyard treehouse. MadeWithHappy offers a great tutorial on how to do this.
5. Set Up a Music Wall
If you don't have neighbors close by and don't mind a little noise, you can build a music wall in your yard.
This wall can be made up of everyday kitchen items and few inexpensive instruments. From pots and pans to xylophones, wind chimes and wooden spoons, there are so many ways to transform your fencing into a musical wonderland.
If you need some inspiration for your wall, FilthWizardry has a great example of a "banging" musical wall.
A music wall will encourage your child to express his or her creativity while fostering a new appreciation for music.
If your kids love playing outside but aren't crazy about staying in the yard, these ideas will help turn your outdoor space into a fun playground for the little ones.
