How is bedtime in your family? Slowing things down with a before-bed book might wrap the evening up nicely and prepare your child for a night of rest. The soothing sound of your voice can lull him or her to sleep, while the magical story you read may inspire fun dreams.

But what makes a good bedtime story? When selecting a book to read before bed, try looking for a slow-moving tale with relaxing illustrations and themes appropriate for your child’s age. Adventurous, overly exciting, or scary tales may be best saved for another time. Need a few ideas? Check out these seven books perfect for bedtime.

1. Goodnight Moon

With its soothing illustrations, and slow, repetitive cadence, there’s a reason this children’s book is such a classic. Help your children say goodnight to the room, the red balloon, and – of course – the moon, with this childhood classic written by Margaret Wise Brown.

2. Where The Wild Things Are

Inspire magical and creative dreams with Where the Wild Things Are. Your child can meet Max and see where his wild behavior takes him, all while enjoying the beloved words and illustrations by Maurice Sendak.

3. The Runaway Bunny

4. Harold and the Purple Crayon

5. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me

6. Are You My Mother?

7. Snoozers

Will tonight be a one-story night or a three-story night? This collection by Sandra Boynton features seven petite stories, so you can choose how many to tell.
