7 Crucial Things I Miss If They’re Not On The List

The experts — doctors, scientists, and mom bloggers — are divided: Is “mom-brain” a thing? Do the impact of pregnancy and the associated hormonal changes continue to affect a mother’s brain when her child is in middle school? Or could it simply be that juggling a whole family’s needs, wants, schedules and health can be tough, especially on only a few hours of sleep a night? Whether you believe “mom-brain” is real or not, being a mother is a full-time job that requires the ability to organize, multi-task and execute with little time to think, eat, or sit down.

Every mom has her own ways of making sure nothing gets forgotten. Some use flow charts and chore wheels, others use apps, and some are the old fashion types who rely on a simple pen and paper and make monster to-lists. I’m a list maker; I live and die by my calendar, I’ve been attached to a day-planner since the first day of high school, and becoming a mom has only increased my need for my trusted companion. It’s the only way I’m able to keep my head on and life on track.

In honor of my love of lists, here is a list of a few important things I would forget to do if I didn’t write them down.

1. Buy toilet paper.

We’ll have three extra tubs of hummus, two-dozen eggs more than we need, and NO TOILET PAPER.

Which leads me to...

2. Write down my shopping list.

Yes, you read that right. I need a list to remember to write down my list.

3. My period.

I always forget it’s coming. All of a sudden I find myself hating my mother and my husband, crying over the fact that my son will get married someday, and all I want to do is eat. Thank god there are apps for everything. I use the Period Diary Pro app. I can track my moods, fertility and it counts down the days to my period. When I find myself wanting to forget my life and run away with the circus, I check the app and nine times out of ten I’m about to receive my monthly visitor.

4. Jury duty.

No joke, I was days away from having a warrant out for my arrest because I missed jury duty. Twice!

5. Trash night.

I like to pretend that “it’s not my job to take out the trash.” It’s one of the few chores I have assigned to my husband, but he is a firefighter and works a few nights a week, so I have to pick up the slack when it comes to trash night. Before putting it on the calendar, I once went over a week without getting the trash out on time.

6. Date night (and all other social engagements).

*TEXT DING*

Friend: Are we still on for tonight?”

Me: Yeah, totally! Can’t wait! (F*CK! And I need a babysitter.)

7. Basic hygiene.

TAKE A SHOWER. Bold print and underlined, and it still doesn’t get done as often as it should.

This confession comes from a momma who is a master multi-tasker, as long as she has her list.
