Our sweet little boy was born on June 29, 2014, just a day before his due date. The pregnancy was as expected, and the delivery seemed to have been so as well. I struggled getting him out, so the doctor used the vacuum 3 separate times and he finally made his entrance. His APGAR scores were normal, but some nurses seemed concerned still. They took him to the nursery for further testing. Within a few hours, the news was getting worse. He ended up being diagnosed with pneumonia and a hole in his lung.
He was life flighted to Primary Children’s in Salt Lake City, Utah. The paramedics were so wonderful and even let my husband ride with them. Every day for about the first week Tucker was there we got more bad news. He was further diagnosed with a fractured skull and meningitis. It was so emotionally draining. And I was recovering myself! But the nurses and doctors were so kind to me. They even made a donut pillow for me out of receiving blankets when my blow up pillow popped! One special nurse even made Tucker’s first Fourth of July memorable by “watching fireworks out the window” with him.
The doctors were so good about calling me if I wasn’t there, about consulting with me whenever they could, and suggesting people tot talk to and places to go for emotional support. We are so grateful for those 16 days where we could see miracle workers doing their job for my child and those around us. It was not on my bucket list by any means, but having that experience has made me a better person and I am so thankful for the people who cared for my little boy (who is 100% healthy and happy today).
