As moms, we all know there is always another load of laundry to wash, another runny nose to wipe, another activity to get to or another conference call to get on. And if we aren't careful, we can get to mom burnout before the day even gets going. Here are 5 tips to avoid mom burnout.
1. Find your support system (your tribe). Step outside your comfort zone. Head to a few playgroups, mom groups, story times. Your next BFF might just be there. And if you are blessed enough to already have these people in your life, lean on them in a way that can help both of you. Watch her kids one afternoon or better yet one weekend and let her do the same.
2. Avoid the naysayers. You know, the folks that never have anything really positive or encouraging to say. You probably know them already, but limit your inner circle (tribe) to the folks that are supportive of you and all that you've got going on.
3. Don't neglect you. This is a good one. I always tell moms, you cannot serve well from a place of empty. It's not selfish. Think back to the last flight you took. Remember when the flight attendant told you to put your mask on first before assisting others, well that's not just for airplane flights. Let the people around you know when you need a minute (or a day/weekend you get the idea) and take it!
4. Be aware of your response when stressed. Do you move to denial, worry, irritability, withdraw? Here's the thing, we can't change what we don't acknowledge.
5. Maintain your identity outside of motherhood. We love being a mom. But remember when you loved writing, painting, reading, girl's nights out? What did you enjoy before being a mom? Our kids deserve to see all of who we are. We owe it to ourselves to be whole in how we show up.
