I wish I would've known how difficult breastfeeding would be. I struggled with supply issues which meant low weight for my daughter. Not knowing how much was 'low' or even how much she needed to eat, the first two weeks were especially challenging. Once we consulted several lactation consultants and my daughter's pediatrician, we started supplementing with formula. The challenges persisted though, with my daughter preferring the flow of the bottle over the work required to nurse from my breast. I desperately wanted breastfeeding to go well, but it really never worked for me or my baby. She was never really exclusively breastfed, but she did get breast milk for two months. It was incredibly hard (and continues to be) to have to explain myself and my reasons for feeding my baby formula. The bottom line is that it doesn't work for everyone, and it's still very possible and very common for the baby to be happy and healthy despite not being fed breast milk, and I wish I had known that.
