I opened up Netflix the other day, and before I knew it, I had a new addiction.

The show Friday Night Tykes invoked so many different reactions in me that I couldn't stop watching. I played football when I was a kid, so there was the nostalgia aspect. Some of the coaches I saw reminded me of coaches I had.

It sparked conversation between my wife and me, when we got to see some parents who went too far, while applauding for those who held their kids accountable and challenged them.

One major takeaway I found is that these football coaches put plenty of time and energy into helping these kids that they don't have to. They don't get paid and they're squeezing in time between work and time with their own families to teach these kids the game.

It made me want to make sure that I always have that time to give to my kids and any activities that they want to participate in.

The major trend I saw with these coaches who were able to put this time in is that they were either self-employed or working in professions that provided plenty of income and flexibility.

Once my kids are 10 or 11, I want to have the flexibility in my schedule and income to go full-tilt with any activity that they enjoy. This process has helped me reframe the way that I tackle my business, so that I can grow it for reasons that are bigger than myself.

I'm Learning To Work Hard And Take Breaks

To create a life that puts my family in a different situation, I must master the art of having full and complete focus while working, and then giving myself the rest and recharge that keeps me in the game.

Science shows that taking rest days promote higher brain function, fosters creativity and helps you to focus more on the task at hand once you do go back to work.

I'm a bit of a workaholic, so it's difficult to give myself the time that I need to rest and recharge. But by reading up on these studies, it kind of reshapes my process and makes it so that I'm not just taking rest, but that I'm also scheduling rest.

In doing this, I find myself going back to work filled with new ideas and far less frustrated by the happenings of the day. Aside from taking entire rest days, I've adapted a practice of setting a timer to work without stop, and then taking a walk or meditation break once the timer goes off.

Meditation is helpful to me because it helps me to reduce stress and improves the way that my brain works for me. It's something that I've sworn by in recent years -- to the point that I make sure to meditate for 20 minutes every night before I go to sleep, no matter what.

I Realize That I Need Help

Putting people around me that can help has done more for me than anything in recent memory.

Since I know that I do want to coach my kids when the time comes, I'll definitely need to have a team around that can make my work life easier. There are plenty of new and different ways to get help these days, since we're all joined together by the power of the internet.

I Am The Business

By choosing to helm my own business and build my family income around entrepreneurship, what I'm really choosing to do is make my business a 24-hour endeavor.

In order to have the energy and time to do this, I need to make sure that my thumbprint, identity and vision is tied to the business every step of the way. When I have a vision for my business, it makes it much easier to have a 5 to 10 year plan, build my brand, and appreciate the efforts that I put in.

This way, work is a labor of love and not something that I have to show up to every day.

By keeping this winning formula in mind, both my family and business life will be better for it.
