Dear 2021-2022 School Year,
Please, don’t suck.
OK, I know that’s a pretty broad request, and, let’s face it, 2020 didn’t set the bar real high. So, allow me to explain myself…
First of all – our kids NEED to interact with other kids. Summer has been good and all…sports came back, so there was that. But, they crave more than an hour and a half baseball game twice a week. Our kids need to socialize. They need to play. Hell, they need to whisper and pass notes to their BFF during class! Our kids need those special bonds that form on playgrounds and in cafeterias.
Next, I think I speak for all parents everywhere when I say, thank God for technology getting us through last school year…but I am DONE with it.
Our kids need to use a pencil on paper – not slide their finger around on an iPad.
They need to play Heads Up 7-Up.
They need to learn teamwork by working on projects in small groups.
OMG, is Around The World with math flash cards still a thing? Because, they totally need that too!
And, teachers – Our kids need to bond with their teachers! Don’t get me wrong – watching our educators step up and show their commitment, even through virtual learning, was pretty cool. But, come on…at home, my 7-year-old had the power to mute her mic and walk away at any time, just to ask me what’s for dinner. That would never happen AT school, where there’s a whole separate set of rules…an entirely different vibe…teachers and staff who are just different than mom!
Listen, I know school wasn’t the only thing in 2020 that was rough. We all had our struggles. Ugh, honestly, a lot of us are still dealing with them! Unemployment…sickness…bills, bills, bills…
The Average Joe is praying for a little stability right now just as much as us parents!
So, what I’m really trying to say here is – I know things aren’t perfect yet. The world is still healing in so many ways. It would just be super awesome if our kids could get some normalcy! If the rest of us have to struggle a tad longer – whatever. Just, give our kids a break, will ya?
2021-2022 School Year, come on. I’m counting on you.
Please, don’t suck.
Sincerely,
A Mom
