What’s the best part of this fun and interactive rock painting activity? You can make it as long and involved of an activity as you want! Or, if you don’t have a ton of time, keep it short and sweet. It’s the perfect activity to start, pause, and then come back to later on to finish.

We set up outside with paintbrushes, toothbrushes, paint, disposable cups, paint trays, a big water bucket, super soakers, and paper towels. Smocks also would have been helpful, ha!

When I did this with the Leyton and Finn, we made it a fun game to first go exploring for rocks first! Then we went to a creek and found some creek rocks to add to our collection. Next we made it another activity to wash the rocks with old toothbrushes!

After that, we added another layer of fun by adding dish soap to our buckets! The boys had so much sudsy fun. After that we rinsed the rocks and let them dry in the sun.

I highly recommend this activity for even your youngest kiddos. You can involve your littlest ones by letting them “paint” the rocks with water, which was what Finn did. Leyton used the actual paint and brushes to paint his rocks!

A neighbor had an awesome idea to paint fun notes or words of encouragement on rocks and lay them out next to the sidewalk! That way, when anyone passed by, they could read the rocks and smile. It’s been so fun to walk around the neighborhood and see sweet notes and kind words. They really do make all the difference. Whether it’s pictures, quotes, bible verses, or just kind words. This fun sensory activity is a great way to spend an afternoon, but also a great way to spread some joy and love.
