Arriving at Sage Lodge, nestled in the serene Paradise Valley of Montana, was like stepping into a world where time stood still, and nature's grandeur took center stage. From the moment I walked in the doors, I knew this would be more than a typical bleisure destination—it had the potential to be an unforgettable experience blending work and leisure in the most picturesque setting.
I was immediately struck by the rustic elegance of its design, seamlessly blending modern comforts with the charm of Montana's wilderness. But what really took my breath away was the lobby window-framed view of Emigrant Peak. During my 3 day stay I never tired of this view.
After a warm welcome from the staff, I settled into my spacious room, complete with a fireplace and balcony looking straight out to the pond. I was delighted to find every amenity I could need for my digital nomad lifestyle. From the well-equipped coffee station, tech hook-ups, plush bedding and cozy seating area, each detail was thoughtfully curated to ensure both comfort and functionality. With high-speed Wi-Fi available throughout the property, I knew I could stay connected to work when I wanted to, but was also invited to “unplug”.
During the day, I found myself drawn to a variety of Sage Lodge's workspaces, where I could focus on my tasks with views of mountains and bald eagles scoping out the pond. The lodge's commitment to providing a conducive environment for remote work was evident, with ample outlets, comfortable seating, and even a snack area, complete with warm cookies everyday at noon.
When it was time to take a break from work, I participated in some of the included activities. One day I enjoyed a guided hike with fellow travelers. Our well-versed guide took us off the beaten path and down to the Yellowstone River. I noticed other people were participating in fly fishing excursions at the Yellowstone River, horseback riding through the lush valleys, hiking along the scenic trails and we even came across a designated area for ax-throwing!
While I had heard about some great restaurants off property, I spent most of my time dining at the on-site restaurants. It was hard to say “no” to just saddling up to the bar and enjoying one of Patty’s incredible old fashions or partaking in the yummy creations the chef whips up each day. From locally sourced meats and fresh produce to handcrafted cocktails inspired by the region's heritage, each dish was a testament to the lodge's commitment to sustainability and excellence. One night I enjoyed The Grill, the lodge’s high-end steakhouse featuring dry-aged steaks and game. I sat looking out on the Yellowstone River, which was stunning, but next time I’m going to check out the Chef Tasting Menu Dinners - where you can sit at the chef’s table and enjoy a five-course dinner with tasting notes provided by their chefs.
For breakfast and lunch, I kept finding my way back to The Fireside Room . This rustic and relaxed restaurant, featuring a Montana-inspired menu, is full of delicious options. Personally I couldn’t get enough of the breakfast skillets and lemon huckleberry pancakes … Yum!
Since I was at Sage Lodge to finish up a big project, I spent a good amount of time working and taking advantage of all the different laptop spots. There’s a variety of places to work in the lobby and there’s even a loft-type space that provides more privacy. But once I shut my laptop and the project was done, I treated myself to a 90 minute massage. It was as heavenly as it sounds. The Spa is located just a few steps from the main lodge and serves as a bit of an oasis. If you book a treatment you get access to the jacuzzi patio, sauna and steam rooms, and relaxation lounge. The only thing missing is a cold plunge, but good news, they are in the works to bring that on site!
Eventually I did have a chance to venture off property and enjoyed Old Saloon,
Campione, and Chico Hot Springs. I also participated in a local trivia night at Pine Creek Lodge (a couple years ago John Mayer and Dave Chappelle showed up for a concert there!) . It’s worth noting that Campione is about a 20 minute drive from the lodge, but it is a “must” and you need a reservation. If you’re lucky enough to land one, make sure to start with the marinated button mushrooms (trust me!), then the manicotti and for dessert the Torta all’Arancia. You’re welcome.
The best part about spending time in Livingston, is that everywhere I went I encountered kind people, incredible food, and great drinks!
In a world filled with hustle and bustle, even digital nomads need places to disconnect from work and reconnect with nature. Sage Lodge is the hidden gem that offered a sanctuary where I could reconnect with nature, rejuvenate my spirit, and find inspiration in the simple beauty of Montana's wilderness … and also finish that big project!
