Challenge: NICU Parenting

I gave birth to my son back in May of 2015. He wasn't supposed to be born until mid June. I developed pre eclampsia at 29 weeks. The doctors almost delivered him at that point but they safely got me and him to 34 weeks. I knew before they took him by c-section that things were going to be complicated. I knew that I wouldn't be able to hold him right away or get to see him for more than a moment before they whisked him off to the NICU. When he came out the Dr. was surprised at his size. He came into this world at 3 and a half pounds and 16 inches long. They expected him to be only 2lbs. So I was grateful that he was bigger. The first time I got a good look at him in the NICU I was still in my hospital bed and only got to look at him for a few minutes before they had to get me back to my room. The first time I held him was mothers day and it was truly the best day of my life. We had to overcome a few obstacles before leaving the hospital but he was out within a month. He does have a heart mumur and had a few delays in development along the way but he is doing well. I know other NICU moms who didn't get to take their babies home that soon or even get to bring the home at all. Greyson is now 2 and a half and thriving. He is a happy boy and makes me so proud everyday. I will never be able to thank all of the doctors and nurses enough who took care of him and I. I make sure that I send them a Christmas card each year and express my thanks over and over. But my thanks and kind words will never be enough to express to them how grateful I am that they took care of him when I couldn't. All the times I would come in and just cry and they would be so supportive and tell me how he was doing and that providing breast milk was the best thing I could do for him. I'm very lucky that he is doing well and that we are past that time in our lives. My husband and I will never forget our experience in the NICU. We are the blessed ones.
