For many women, being a mother is one of happiest things that’ll ever happen to them and they feel incredibly blessed. Unfortunately, as wonderful as being a mother is, there are some women who don’t have the ability to stay at home with their child – they have to get out there and earn a paycheck for one reason or another.
Of course, having to get a job doesn’t mean you have to settle for any position out. You have choices of what you could do, within reason anyway.
As a mother, you might have to have a flexible schedule, especially if you are the only parent in the house to care for the children.
If you’re looking to find fulfilling career that’s going to allow you to have a flexible schedule but still gives you the chance to spread your wings and help people then this is the article for you.
We’ve selected a bunch of career options that are great for a mother looking to make a difference in the community – maybe one of them is up your alley!
1. Entrepreneur
There are countless entrepreneurs that have developed organizations or businesses with the sole goal of improving society. In fact, such business has become so popular that there is an entire business niche dedicated to it: social entrepreneurship.
But don’t think you have to save the world to make an impact. You can help others by doing something as simple as developing products, platforms or services that help other Moms like me and you. This is another popular approach to entrepreneurship with many individuals calling this movement The Momtrepreneur Era!
Feel as though you aren’t educated enough to be an entrepreneur? No worries. You don’t really need an education. That said, you can always take a few online courses from an MBA program to help bridge some of the gaps that you may have. Either way, being an entrepreneur is an excellent career for those looking to improve society for future generations.
2. Freelancing
Mothers who can’t stand being away from their child or simply don’t want to continue working for “The Man,” there’s nothing as liberating as being your own boss.
One way you can do that is by becoming a freelancer. This is especially a great career choice if you are a driven individual who is organized, can meet deadlines, and has the desire to succeed.
The great thing about freelancing is that you don’t necessarily have to be a creative person. Sure, you have the creative jobs like writing, graphic design, or photography; but you also have non-creative options like legal services, transcription, social media manager, or web development.
The beauty of diving into a freelancing career is that you aren’t bound by any strict schedules, code of conduct, or dress code. You could literally do your work in a unicorn onesie if you truly wanted to. Also, you can schedule your work around your children’s schedule.
3. Healthcare And/Or Social Work
When you think of healthcare careers, you probably think of doctors, nurses, and orderlies. However, those aren’t the only careers available in this field.
For moms who are interested in studying without having to leave home, there are a ton of online healthcare degree programs available which features a suite of healthcare programs ranging from nursing to health care informatics to psychology.
For those who really want to help those suffering in their community, you could take courses to become a social worker. If that isn’t appealing to you and you have a background in IT, you can become a medical records tech, an IT coordinator, data analyst, or even a health information specialist.
In short – healthcare is brimming with career possibilities and with online courses, you can get a degree and begin working in no time!
4. Education
As a mom, you already know that the future belongs to our children so it’s important that they receive a good education. By becoming a teacher, you’re doing your part to help make a positive change in the community. You have the ability to make an impact on your students while teaching the fundamentals.
We will admit, becoming a teacher isn’t going to allow you to buy expensive cars and go crazy come Christmas time. Teaching isn’t just a job, nor is it about the money – teaching is about making a good impression on students and showing them someone cares about them. It shows you want nothing but success for them, not from them.
5. Fitness Instructor
Chasing your kid around the house is certainly a workout, but maybe it’s not the type of workout you enjoy. For moms who love staying in shape and exercising, becoming a fitness instructor is a viable option.
In order to become a fitness instructor, you may need to complete certification courses based upon type of specialty. Even then, many gyms require their instructors to have either an associates or a bachelor’s degree that relates to health and fitness.
What does it take to be a fitness instructor you ask? You need to be physically fit of course, but you also have to be a great motivator, you have to be a people person and be able to listen to others. You should also be able to be a problem solver because as a fitness instructor, you’ll be tasked with assessing the fitness needs of your clients and creating a fitness plan specifically for them.
People who do go into fitness aren’t doing it because they need to make tons of money. For the most part, people will take a job in the fitness industry because it offers flexible scheduling, someone is always hiring, you’re working with people, and you’re always moving.
Sometimes, that’s all a mom needs – a chance to get out of the house, move around, and have a conversation with adults!
