One of the most useful accessories for crocheters is a hook case. Whether you're hooked while traveling or just want to keep everything together near your sofa, the case is a perfect way to protect and hold your hooks. When I was buying yarn stores last week, I came across some nice tablecloths and realized that they would be the perfect base for a hook box, especially for beginner sewers. The placemat allows you to skip a few steps, and you can find some very elegant placemats for little money (I found this one on sale at Target for $ 2.78). You just need to know how to sew some straight lines to complete this project.

materials

• 1 cloth mat (approximately 14 inches x 19 inches): stripes make it easy to keep seam lines straight
• ruler
• 22 inches in length of rickrack or ribbon (for the tie)
• Sewing machine or needle and hand sewing thread
• scissors
• Iron

Press the fold. Fold the length of the rickrack in half and place the folded rickrack between the fold of the mat, approximately 1 inch down from the top edge of the folded section (as shown above). Set the rickrack in place so it does not slip while sewing. Sew the layers of the individual tablecloth on the left and right edges, starting sewing on the pressed fold and ending at the edge of the folded section. Mark a line every 1-1 / 2 inches along the folded edge of the placemat. It will sew along these lines to make each hook compartment. I varied a little the width of my compartments, following the stripes on the tablecloth. If you want your hook compartments to be wider or narrower, adjust the marks accordingly.
