My husband and I worried all the time about whether or not our little girl was getting enough breastmilk...or was I starving her? (Many well meaning family members actually said so.) No one told me about how many wet diapers to expect or how often she would want to feed. It all worked out fine and I am glad I didn't listen to those who never had breastfeeding experience, but those first weeks were a doozie! So, I am now a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor and an Infant Massage Instructor.
What I had - that you do not - is four to six days in the hospital. That was plenty of time for my milk to come in and ask the appropriate questions that all new nursing moms (and dads) have. Today you are released before your milk comes in. How on earth are you supposed to know what to expect?
I tell moms, go with your heart, mothers have been feeding their children since the beginning of time. If you have any questions, concerns or discomfort seek out a qualified breastfeeding counselor.
My hint for mom: set up a quiet spot to feed your baby, put your feet up, have a tall glass of water at your side to sip on, listen to some soft music and bond with your baby!
