I don't know why I always feel like I have to entertain my children. They have each other to play with and I have to be honest, the more I try to plan fun activities for them, the more things seem to fall apart.

I've searched Pinterest to try and find genius ways to keep my kids entertained, it always turns out to be more work than it's worth. There is usually some kind of arguing over who gets what or complaining that they don't want to do what I just spent an hour searching online for.

Then there's the money we've spent on entertainment that only lasts so long. For example, we decided last year that we were going to splurge with some of our stimulus money and purchase a bounce house for the kids. They loved it the first few times. Now it seems like it takes longer to set it up and take it down than the amount of time they spend playing in it.

So I've decided for the sake of my sanity that we're going old school this summer. It's time for imaginations to run wild! I'm not going to the store to buy crafting supplies or buying any new toys. I'm not listening to any ‘Mom, I'm bored!’ nonsense.

I'm sure many of you will agree that when we were younger, our parents sent us outside and said to be back when the street lights came on. I'm not ready to go that far since my son is still younger but I do want them to learn how to entertain themselves better.

You know the most fun my children have had all year so far? When I sent them outside and told them to go play with the hose. They actually used their imaginations and just had fun.

Oh look, there's a tree! Be careful and go climb it. Can you believe I sat in a chair for 30 minutes without anyone asking me any questions? Sometimes less really is more. My kids sat and dug holes in the dirt for about an hour the other day and it was wonderful.

I love that we've been spending more time just being outside and enjoying nature. I think that going through the pandemic this past year has made me want to slow down and I realized that we can do more with less.

That's right my fellow moms, we don't have to constantly try to entertain our kids. If you let them sit and be bored long enough, they will figure out ways to have fun and you just might get a break in the process.
