Parents, you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.

Or just as likely, we’ve got questions and you’ve got answers.

Challenge: Bringing Home Baby: What Do You Wish You’d Known?

Listen to what your baby is telling you

When I was pregnant everyone would tell me "You just know what to do when the baby comes." I was stupid enough to believe them. I mean they should know they were mothers and I had all of those wonderful parenting books and the internet so I was set.

In a sense you do know what to do when they come but you also have to learn what they like and the type of person they are. Even though they are brand new into this world they have their own personalities and things they like. Yes, I knew how to hold my daughter and change her diaper but I didn't know that I would have to burp her by putting her on her stomach on my lap and tap her back so hard that I felt like I was hurting her to get a burp out. I never in a million years thought that I would feed her cereal way before I planned to but that's the way it happened. After three evenings of listening to her scream someone told me "Feed that baby!" "She needs more than that formula!" So the cereal began. It was pretty watered down at first but my baby loved it and she didn't cry all evening anymore.

There are countless other things that I did and still do as a mother that are not perfect in other people's eyes. With all of the debates in the parenting world sometimes you just don't know where to turn or who to listen to. That's when you start listening to your baby. Just like we as adults are all different so are these precious little bundles. Every baby likes different things and that's okay. It's a lot of trial and error and trust me even if they can't talk they will let you know what they like.

Of course there are times where suggestions and advice are much needed. Those times where you are at the end of your rope and have run out of ideas. But always listen to what your baby is telling you. After spitting up for days they might need a different formula. If they throw those peas at you they probably don't like them so move on to another green veggie and save the peas for another day. Or maybe they will like them if they are "hidden" in some carrots. My last piece of advice is to give yourself a break mama; you are doing a great job. Just ask your little one; they will tell you.
