According to the US National Center for Health Statistics, the best way to treat people with asthma, allergies, bronchitis or sinusitis is to reduce the amount of synthetic chemicals in the home environment.
People tend to think that homemade products are time-consuming and difficult to make, and for some things that may be true. But homemade household cleaners are quite easy to make and most of the ingredients you'll need are probably already in your kitchen or any drugstore, market, or Walgreens!
So, with just a little spare time, some inexpensive, readily available supplies and the desire to improve the air quality in your home, you can make some safe, all-natural products that you can feel comfortable about exposing your family to.
*What You Will Need:
- Vinegar
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Borax
- Lemon Juice
- Baking Soda
- Hot Water
- Ice Tray
Disinfectant Spray
To make a spray that can be used for just about any area that needs freshening up, mix:
- ½ cup of borax
- 1 gallon of hot water
Dishwashing Liquid
Make your own dishwashing liquid by simply combining
- ¼ cup of lemon juice
- ¾ cup of warm water
Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Are you tired of all those strong smelling chemical cleaners that are almost as bad as tolerating the stale odors? Make your own non-offensive toilet bowl cleaner by mixing:
- ¼ cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of vinegar
You simply let the mixture sit for 10 minutes or so, and then scrub the toilet with a brush and you’re done!
Window Cleaner
Clean windows naturally with a mixture of:
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of rubbing alcohol
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar

Keep Your Garbage Disposal Smelling Fresh w/ Vinegar
You can clean and freshen the garbage disposal by pouring vinegar into an ice tray and freezing it. Once frozen, put the vinegar ice cubes down the disposal. Grind them up and then run cold water through for a few seconds.

Remove Soap Film w/ Vinegar
You can get rid of the unsightly soap film on glassware by placing a cup of vinegar on the bottom rack of your dishwasher, then running it for five minutes. Remove the vinegar and then run the dishwasher though the full cycle.

Laundry (You Guessed It, Vinegar!)
There are many uses for vinegar in the laundry room. To freshen up the washing machine, clean the hoses and unclog soap scum by putting 1 cup of vinegar in the washing machine and then running a regular cycle, but without clothes. Do this once a month for best results.
You can also remove tough stains and brighten fabric colors by rubbing vinegar on stains such as coffee, tea, mustard or fruit and then washing as normal, but adding ½ cup of the vinegar to the rinse cycle.
