We always had a feeling that our girls would end up in the NICU. It seems like something most "twins parents" went through.
On November 30th, 2016 our girls were born, each weighing 3lbs, 12 oz :) Being over 7 weeks early, the girls we're whisked away immediately by a handful of NICU staff.
Our girls spent the next three weeks in the NICU. While the care and the hospital was the amazing, it was still incredibly difficult.
1) We didn't have our girls in my wife's recovery room. Hearing all the babies crying was tough. Sure we got to visit, but being the family (what seemed like the only one) without their babies was hard.
2) We had to ask to hold our babies. This was for their safety, and after the first week or so, we could do it whenever. It just stunk that we had to ask to hold our girls.
3) We decided to leave and spend the nights in our home. It was very hard, especially for my wife, to leave our girls each night. We just knew it was better for everyone's health to make sure we got "decent" sleep each night.
We loved our NICU (shoutout to Meriter in Madison, WI) and the nurses were all amazing. We lucked out when our girls were able to come home three days before christmas (still under 5lbs!).
A year later, our girls are almost walking, are in the 50% for ALL BABIES :) :) and are developmentally fine.
We recorded several podcast episodes (The Twinning Podcast) during our time in the NICU. They are very honest and raw. (episodes 11, 15, 16, 17 and 18)
