As a former educator, I am thrilled about American Girl's choice for the American Girl Doll of the Year. STEM is such an important aspect of education, and the new Luciana Vega doll will expose young girls to endless possibilities in the sciences and space travel.
Her storyline is unique and engaging. Luciana Vega is an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. In order to bring the doll into existence, American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors which included: scientists, and astronauts. They helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.
As a mother of an inquisitive American Girl doll fan, I know first hand how academic exposure and educationally appropriate toys can change the life of a child.
Her cool line of space-inspired products include a Mars habitat and flight suit. The most amazing thing about the Luciana doll is that she shows what it can mean to be a girl in today's world. Her ability to represent strong character, creative thinking, collaboration, and the impact of STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Because technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.
