I spent the weekend with my sisters in Atlanta. We live in three different states and met there for an Elton John concert on his Farewell Tour.
The sister in the middle (literally and in birth order) posted our car selfie on her Instagram page. One of her daughters, (my niece) commented, “THESE women are strong and beautiful!”
I love that.
And I love that she believes we are “strong and beautiful.”
As the weekend unfolded, the three sisters reconnected. We talked about hard things, work things, life things, Faith things and then laughed and danced until our sides and knees hurt.
On the drive home, I thought about my niece’s words.
Women are strong, but oftentimes strength looks a lot like perseverance and just showing up. Each of us have faced our own personal struggles and battled the demons that fought hard to throw us off the mountain we were climbing. We persevered. We kept going and that’s what makes you strong when you feel weak and broken.
But we’re beautiful, not because of our smiles (although that helps) but because we’ve shed tears. Lots of them. Our hearts see each of our struggles and we show up to be with them. To sit with them. We show up for the people in our lives, sisters in ALL the states and those around the world. We have compassion for others because we’ve been through the fire and before we take our last breath, we’ll be thrown off our mountain again.
Sisters, we are strong because we rise and keep climbing.
We are beautiful because we lift others when they fall.
