The land is something that almost everyone takes for granted. Is it just dirt, right? No, soil is vital for to humankind and preserving it is our duty. Therefore it is important that we, as responsible adults, teach kids the value of land conservation.

Plant More Trees

Planting more trees and shrubs bind the soil and helps in erosion control. Impervious surfaces such as patios and the driveway allow rainwater to fall freely to the ground. The steady flow of water gradually gains momentum and erodes away the soil on river banks. Pave stones rather than build concrete patios that allow the water to percolate deep underground. Contemporary and research backed construction engineering practices can help with erosion control.

A Rain Garden

A rain garden is a shallow depression on land that collects the rainwater falling from the patios and balconies. It is like a hole used for harvesting rainwater and enhancing the growth of wetlands. However, ensure that these water puddles are frequently cleaned so as to prevent microorganisms from breeding.

Buffer Strip

Buffer strips are long stretches of shrubs and other thick plants with thick roots planted along the river banks to hold the soil during excessive flooding. The buffer strips also prevent the mud-water from entering waterways.

Add Mulch

Adding a layer of mulch to the top soil enhances the water retention capacity of the land. It protects the ground against rain and maintains the pH levels of the field. Weed, vegetable peels, and other degradable bio-wastes can be used as mulch for your kitchen garden.

Manage Water Properly

Controlling the water flow is imperative to maintaining the strength of the soil. Adding excessive water may flood the saplings. As a result, the roots lose their hold on the ground and erode away. Gullies form on barren loose land and wash away the topsoil. Design the backyard gardens on elevation contours that catch the excess water and spread it over the landscape evenly. You can even install a rain barrel under your porch to collect the water and use it for irrigation.

Caring for the soil crucial for the long-term viability of our gardens and forests. Therefore it is important that we protect our land from eroding away. Preventing soil erosion and saving forests is the best way to protect the environment.
