There's this crazy myth that mompreneurs are always in balance. But the truth is, that couldn't be more of a lie. No matter how many self-help books you read, classes you take, or kids you have- balancing entrepreneurship and parenthood is going to be a challenge.
I know I've spent countless nights wondering whether or not I'm good enough at both. Only with time and patience have I been able to overcome the struggles. Here's what I've learned:
Forget About Perfect
Life itself is incapable of being balanced. Especially when you walk the path of business owner and parent. It's not about holding yourself to some crazy standard of what it means to be the perfect parent. It's about being able to create healthy boundaries between all of your life passions and children.
Keep Your Priorities in Tact
As I'm sure anyone can agree, the first priority will always be your children. In fact, there is much more your children can teach you about running a business than vice versa. Never make the mistake of choosing work over your children.
Seriously, don't do it.
This doesn't always need to evoke the image of a stoic woman bent over a computer. This means allowing work to wither on your ability to truly be there.
Put the cell phone down. Let the emails wait until the morning. Your kids pick up on your feelings and if you're exuding stress, they will too. Leave your office at the office- whether that's a big building downtown or an office on the second floor of your house.
Narrow Your Down Your Responsibilities
As parents, we spend a lot of time thinking about the thousands of different tasks we need to balance at any given time. Each aspect of your life needs to be given the attention it deserves, and this means recognizing what the most important task to do right here, right now is. Make the most of your time.
If you're constantly making your time at work productive, you'll find it much easier to disconnect from the office once you are home.
Focus: Stop Multi-Tasking
At least for a little while. Though multi-tasking can be great and is often the drug of choice for most parents, I've benefited greatly from practice and center myself on one task at a time. Especially when it comes to spending time with my children.
Even if it takes the 20 minutes you really thought you couldn't afford to spend, focus on every interaction your child chooses to have with you. Handle their needs one at a time and take the time to give every interaction the attention it deserves.
An old proverb says, "If you chase two rabbits, you won't catch either one." Challenge yourself to handle one thing at a time.
If you really think about it, both entrepreneurship and parenthood rely on your ability to balance the tasks at hand and nurture an environment. Balance is the force that we super moms use to keep ourselves from falling. The more things move: From our kids growing up to our office expanding- the harder it is to achieve that balance.
Do you have any advice on balancing work and parenthood? Where have you struggled in the past? I'm looking forward to getting the perspective of other parents.
