It’s so important to teach your children that success is possible in whatever they choose to do. However, success doesn’t always come easy, and your kids need to know that, too. This is a lesson that Luana Ribeira, the brains behind the daring publicity campaigns put out by Dauntless PR, learned from her own parents, and it helped set her up to be the person and businesswoman she is today.

As the daughter of two entrepreneurs, whose several businesses she saw growing and changing before her young eyes, Luana, also known as Eirian Parry, bore witness to the determination her parents had to give the family a good life. They channelled all of their energies into multiple businesses to make that happen, and one of them, Parry’s Furniture in Anglesey, is still going after 37 years of dedicated service, with customers who love what they do and appreciate their work ethic.

But this doesn’t mean to say that their successes came easy. In fact, as Luana explains, “being brought up by entrepreneurs can really teach you a thing or two about resilience.” You see, as hardworking and savvy as her mother and father are, running a business is rarely straightforward. “They faced their fair share of knocks,” Luana says. But, “while it was difficult at times, they always picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and started again.”

Growing up, Luana learned that “you don’t get anywhere without taking risks, and if you want to reach your full potential, you can’t be afraid to put yourself out there.” Still, she knows that it isn’t easy taking that leap into the unknown, because a good outcome is never guaranteed – “and that’s what holds so many people back.”

But Luana was lucky, because she was taught throughout her childhood, through her parents’ words and their actions, that it’s okay to fail. In fact, it’s not just okay – “sometimes failure is necessary.” As she goes on to explain, “if you want to learn how to get it right next time, then occasionally you have to get things wrong. And, even if the failure you face is painful, you have to always remember that it will never be as bad as not knowing what could have been.”

You can (and should) learn from your failures and your mistakes, because “that’s how you grow as an entrepreneur. Actually, it’s how you grow as a person, too.” That’s the wisdom Luana’s parents imparted on her, and it’s how she got to where she is today.

“Without the lessons my mum and dad taught me, I might never have had the courage to pursue my passions. Or maybe I would have given up the moment times got tough. But instead, I failed time and time again, knowing that eventually it would lead to success.”

So in teaching their daughter about the importance of perseverance in the face of failure, Luana’s parents actually taught her everything she needed to know about success. “That’s why I have always kept going against all odds, even when it looked like there was no way forward and when all I could see was darkness. I couldn’t quit. It’s not in me. The lesson to try, try and try again was ingrained in me so deeply that it became part of who I am.”

As a person and an entrepreneur, Luana prides herself on her resilience and her determination. She has Gwynfor and Carol Parry to thank for that, because “what they showed me as they ran their many businesses shaped who I am today.”
