And just like that my youngest daughter Brooke’s freshman year “at” the University of Michigan is over. Last August, she moved on campus with so much enthusiasm and hope in her heart for an exciting freshman year. The Fall semester was rough with all the expected strict and isolating Covid measures and her own bout with COVID. The university later asked that the freshman students not return for the Spring semester. Brooke stayed home. She worked day and night zooming all her classes, virtually rushing for her sorority and studying at this desk. Never whining or complaining.

My husband Peter and I have had the benefit of enjoying her beautiful company for a little longer than we expected.

She took her physics exam last night behind closed doors at this desk from 7:30-9:30PM.

While she was busy with her exam, Peter looked at me and said “Wow, her freshman year is over tonight.” He ran downstairs and got the party streamers to line her door so that she’d exit her room in “celebration.”

The clock struck 9:30PM, her door opened, we heard her laugh and then Peter had the Michigan fight song cued up and blasting as she came down the stairs. I couldn’t believe how corny he was but then I looked at the joy (and relief!) on her face and I knew that she will remember this silly little moment forever.

COVID has affected everyone, some way more than others 😢...but there have also been some sweet little moments that remain...💛💙
