Many parents would wonder why they have to promote good mental health for their kids. Surely as children, their life is pretty relaxed and free from the stresses of adulthood, right?

Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, as over 17.1 million children in the United States have a psychiatric disorder.

While it’s normal for kids to experience states of worry, sadness and dear, children who are mentally healthy are better equipped to handle these emotions.

You can play a large part in fostering positive mental well-being in your children’s live. Here are some top tips to promote positive mental health.

Let them share

Speak to your child often and ask them to share in any of their problems or concerns. Talking about worries is a great way to remove the burden and will assist in reducing anxiety. This also lets them know that they can be open and honest, and that their issues are important to you.

Sometimes, your child may not want to directly tell you that they are suffering with a concern. Look for signs of distress and calmly ask questions that will assist you in understanding how they may be feeling.

Kid's should perform some Indoor activities also.

A good night’s sleep

Studies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Younger children often need between 9-12 hours of sleep a night, while teenagers require 8-10.

Don’t underestimate the importance of sleep in helping with stress. Enforce a regular sleeping routine for your child so they are going to bed and rising at the same time during the week.

Have fun during play

Children should have adequate time to play. Some live such full-on, organized lives that we forget they are kids they should have fun in their everyday life. If your child constantly seems stressed or overwhelmed by ongoing events, encourage them to play or do a fun activity.

Provide your children with opportunities to make the most of their backyard. Purchase play equipment, such as balls or swings. Promote fun exercise by watching them monkey climb or engage in bouncing fun. The main takeaway is to make certain your kids have time to be kids and play.

Promote creative outlets

Creativity is an important element in getting kids to express themselves. It also allows them to get so immersed in an activity that they forget about the time and place. This helps reduce stress and worry levels. In fact, one study found that kids’ imaginations helped them cope better with pain.

Make sure you help your child pursue their passions. You can do this by providing them the materials or information they require to explore their creativity.

Give them space

Kids of all ages will benefit from having their own space. This gives them the opportunity for quiet time to think and reflect. Avoid smothering at all times of the day. Having your own space is important for personal development, allowing your child to formulate their own answers to their struggles.

So, give them their own time, but always be there to help them further if you can see they need help. It’s about finding the right balance of giving them freedom but being attentive in knowing when to talk to them.
