I have recently started this tradition with my children. It involves reading together, a family field trip, and cooking. And the most important thing...spending time together and making memories.
The Book: Applesauce Season by Eden Ross Lipson Illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein 
Family field trip to the apple orchard (if you live near one) or the farmer's market (like in the book)
Cooking: Making applesauce together.
