Creating a garden that is beautiful, fun and safe is something that entirely depends on your perspective. In other words, it is not the same through the eyes of a child and from the perspective of an adult. For an adult, a quiet deck area where they can drink their morning coffee may be fun, while for the child, it is anything but. Furthermore, what is safe for a parent may not necessarily be so for a child, which makes your job that much more complicated. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to turn your backyard into a kid-friendly oasis.
Keep it clean
The first thing that will ensure the safety of your offspring is the question of exactly how clean your backyard is. You would be surprised at just how easy it is for debris and thrash to find their way to your backyard, but these are not the only things you need to worry about. While poison ivy may look incredible on the wall of your home, it is definitely not something you want around your kids. In fact, poison ivy is just one of the potentially hazardous backyard plants which can cause an allergic reaction.Thorn bushes are another thing to avoid, but are, luckily, easy to both spot and remove.
Turn it into a playground
As for the aspect of fun, you might want to start constructing a playground in the backyard. Depending on the room you’ve got, the budget for this project and the willingness to DIY some of the things, you can go from something as simple as a swing or a sandbox to something more complex, like a slide or a treehouse. Those willing to go one step further might even look for a trampoline. Trampolines themselves aren’t that expensive, yet the price of shipment might be quite substantial on its own. Therefore, it might be for the best to restrict your search to your own region. For instance, a New Zealander should probably look for trampolines in NZ.
A basketball court or a soccer field?
Another great idea is to install a basketball hoop or a portable soccer goal. Needless to say, these two ideas require a bit more room, which makes them ill-suited for those with smaller backyards. Moreover, while a miniature soccer field works just fine on grass, for a basketball court you will have to consider introducing concrete to your backyard. Needless to say, this makes the project a bit more expensive and a bit less safe.
Construct a shed
Finally, proper backyard maintenance involves pruning, mowing, watering and cutting. As you can already see, most of these processes require sharp and potentially dangerous tools. Therefore, in order to keep your kids safe, you need to find a way to store all of these items in a place that is within the easy reach to you, but completely inaccessible to your kids. One of the ways to handle this situation is to construct a shed and keep it under a lock. These sheds come in different shapes, sizes and materials, which means that you shouldn’t have a hard time making them fit into your backyard either.
Conclusion
At the very end, there is no reason why your kid-friendly backyard can’t be visually pleasing, as well. Rather than having a playground stick out like a sore thumb, you should look for a way to seamlessly integrate it into your garden. Moreover, by working your way around these elements, you will make this landscaping into somewhat of a challenge and perhaps even get an opportunity to put your creativity to the test. In this way, you will go one step further and turn your backyard into a real kid-friendly oasis for the entire family to enjoy.
