Every parent has a healthy amount of paranoia surrounding their kid's health and safety.
If you sit by yourself long enough, you're probably going to get uneasy wondering what your kids are getting into and whether you have taken every precaution to protect them.
Household accidents account for a whopping $21 million every year, so you need to minimize the risk by controlling what you can.
Use these five cornerstones so that you're able to protect your kid and create a happy, healthy and safe home.
1. Be Mindful About Bath Time And Pools
If your child is going through the terrible two's or is pre-school age, you need to be very mindful about the water in your home. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading risk for kids aged 1 to 4.
While you don't need to be alarmed, make sure that you're always aware.
Monitor your kids at bath time and never fill the tub up anymore than necessary. Your child can bathe just as well in a shallow tub. For babies, purchase a tub helper that props them up and provides some safeguards.
If you own a pool, be sure that you monitor your child each and every time they're in the water, and close the pool off when it's not in use. Sign your child up for swimming lessons as early as possible so that they're also able to fend for themselves.
You can even get your child started with swimming lessons when they're a baby, since they naturally take to the water.
2. Keep Them From Electrical Harm
Do everything possible to protect your child from electrical harm by covering the outlets with heavy duty plastic fillers.
Aside from these fillers, get outlets installed that you can switch on and off, so that it's not getting fed any electricity to begin with. Make sure that your child is aware of the danger of outlets and that they never play in or around it.
3. Teach Them To Look Out For Themselves
The most important key for your child's well-being is to make sure they have lessons that allow them to keep themselves safe.
If you have stairs, teach your child how to scoot on their bottom, rather than walk down. This way, they'll be able to move around without you being worried. Show them how to use handles and rails, and teach them to be aware of themselves and their surroundings.
These lessons can be fun and will allow your child to grow into capable human beings.
4. Learn CPR, First Aid And Other Skills
You can never start too early learning the skills to jump into action and protect your child.
Get CPR certified so that you're able to help your child if they're choking or if they need rescue breathing. These basic life skills are invaluable and can potentially save your child's life.
By getting the certification, rather than just learning the skills, you'll be tested on it and can build on techniques that are useful in your entire life.
Taking a first aid course can help you deal with cuts, scrapes, burns and other problems that will make your house a safer place overall. It can make your relationship better, as taking part in safety training seminars helps mom and dad bond as parents, make the household safer and strengthen the entire family structure.
5. Get Your Medical Insurance In Order
A lot of changes have taken place in the healthcare industry, so you need to always be informed.
If you haven't enrolled for insurance in 2018, check with your state to see if open enrollment deadlines have been pushed back. Make sure to include your child on the insurance policy so that you can get health coverage in the event that your child does sustain an injury that requires medical attention.
So there you have it. If you follow these five tips, you'll make your household a safer place to be for your little one, and improve your skills as a parent.
