I got goosebumps when I read this challenge because the past year of my life has been about refocusing my dreams and pursuing them in a way I've never done before. I'm an actress and writer who's struggled to "break through" for many years. In order to vent my frustrations, find like-minded mamas, and connect with my industry I launched a podcast called Motherhood in Hollywood and I've never felt closer to making my dreams come true.
Podcasts are the new mommy blogs and a lot of people are flocking to the medium for various reasons. I chose to do a podcast for a number of reasons myself. I'm a former news reporter who loves asking people questions about their story, what makes them tick, and what lessons they've learned. And I'm a comedian so of course I'm self-deprecating in only the way comedians can be.
As an actress, I love to hear myself talk so a podcast seemed like the perfect way to combine these attributes in a way I could be entertaining yet enlightening. I can't tell you how empowering my podcast has been. I decide who I interview, set my own schedule, say what I want and work with who I want. I can think of only a handful of outlets where you have that much control over your business.
I've interviewed powerful producers of films like Bad Moms and award-winning TV shows like Louis. I've also interviewed industry executives like the Executive Vice President of the Jim Henson Company on the future and legacy of their shows, comedians, celebrity moms and more. All of their advice/tips/knowledge ties into one thing: pursuing your dreams using the skills and people available to you.
What I've learned from the moms (and dads!) that I've interviewed is that we're all on a journey to find happiness and fulfillment in some way. Whether that's to be a stay-at-home-mom, a working mom, a work-at-home-mom, a mompreneur, etc. We want to be happy. We want our kids to be happy. And I've found that showing my daughter by using something as small as a microphone, I can make my larger than life dreams come true.
