This year (2019) I wanted to do a homemade family costume. Something the three of us could stop traffic in. (pun intended) A costume that was unique, something I had never seen, but also something that everyone could relate too. I got the idea over the summer as I was teaching my children to use the crosswalks signals on a family walk. As the kids were arguing about who would push the crosswalk button, I was thinking Halloween opportunity.

If you know me, you know I have a strong creative side but can not sew or have access to a sewing machine. Which means our homemade costumes are limited. With some poster board, glue stick, duck tape, pencil, battery operated lights and a total of 18 batteries my crosswalk and traffic lights came to life.

The hardest part of this project was convincing my 8 year old daughter (Ruby) and 7 year old son (Beck) to be crosswalk signals. As these are not your typical elementary age Halloween costumes. My daughter had her heart set on dressing up as a bumble bee. And my son wanted to be Slappy from the Goosebumps stories.

We made a deal where I had to create the costumes first and then they would decide. Challenge accepted. After they both saw the costumes turned on in the dark, they were in.
