WAYS TO TEACH KIDS KINDNESS

Here are some things parents can do to encourage kids to become kinder and better includers:

• Encourage your child to seek out the new kid and introduce themselves.

• Explain how it is awesome to have a circle of friends but excruciating to be on the outside of one.

• When their light shines, teach them including others in the glow is kind. Make sure they are aware that leaving others in the shadows...is not.

• Teach them to not exclude anyone from a game at recess. Share with them “Includers" become future leaders.

• Encourage them to invite the kid sitting alone at lunch to join them and introduce that child to others.

• Tell them to be grateful if they are lucky enough to have at least one friend in their class. Remind them to offer their friendship to someone who wasn't as fortunate.

• Make sure they know ganging up on someone is wrong. And if it's two against one, it really crosses the line.

• Let them know they can walk away from drama; Stand up for others whose voices may be softer; Never be indifferent.

• Teach them to try and work out the small stuff. Know kids make mistakes. Forgive.

• Empathise that kindness rules. They should lead with it.

And, their teachers will be in charge of teaching math, science, reading, writing, etc.

and most do way more than that.

But...

It is our job as parents to teach our kids to be GOOD humans! Show don’t just tell. Make kindness a verb.
