As I write this, I'm in bed with a broken ankle. Fell the wrong way doing what I love- rock climbing. I've never broken a bone before, and I probably won't be on it for another 6 weeks- at minimum.

It's my husband's birthday week, and we're supposed to be in Thailand, but that's postponed for now. Life, both the good and the bad, happens in sheer moments, and we all underestimate the magnitude that comes from what we cannot control.

It's an unfortunate circumstance, but I'm doing my best to practice gratitude and acceptance. Gratitude that I'm alive, gratitude that I'm likely going to heal, gratitude that I have health insurance that allows me to get my surgery in two days.

It's not fun to plan for the emergencies. It's much more fun to plan for the day-to-day adventures- it's much more fun to give into impulsive buys.

But, you need to be prepared. Health, after all, requires taking care of present and future self.

Financially, it means paying your taxes and buying auto insurance. It means building an emergency fund. It means using a home security system to protect your valuables and hiring a good lawyer if and when something bad happens.

Mentally, it means engaging in routine self-care. Praying, reading, reflecting, engaging in positive hobbies, and spending time with people that inspire you and lift your spirit. These should never just be optional- they are medicine for the soul, and they are medicine for your future happiness and self-esteem.

Physically, it means eating nutritious foods- not just because they can help with your overall energy and health right now, but because they act as an insurance for warding off future ailments. It means stretching and working out, avoiding bad habits, wearing sunscreen- all those things your mother told you to do!

Bad things will happen in all our lifetimes- and this is not just me being a total pessimist. It's me being real, being honest, being aware with what this world holds for us.

We all owe it to ourselves to be prepared, to be aware of what lies in front of us. We all owe it to ourselves to take care of the older versions that lie in our souls. No, it may not be the most exciting or fun responsibility we adults can have, but it's an important one nevertheless.

Live in the present, yes, but give for the future. Both your selves will thank you for it!
