According to the most recent statistics, there are approximately 2.4 million traffic-related injuries per year in the United States. What this means is that no matter how careful of a driver you may be, accidents can happen and often when you least expect it. As a parent driving around with your children in the car, you tend to be ultra-alert and aware of not just your driving, but also the driving of all those around you. Anticipating how others will react and drive though is impossible, which is why accidents can happen.

If you’ve been in a car accident with your children in the car, it can be terrifying to say the least. Your mind instantly goes to them and their safety is all you can focus on. In those first few moments after a crash it can be overwhelming, and in the case of a serious accident, every moment counts. So, what should you do if you are involved in an accident with your kids in the car? Let’s take a closer look.

Start by Calling 911

It doesn’t matter if the accident is serious and involved multiple vehicles, or seems like a simple collision between you and one other vehicle, you will want to call 911 immediately. It’s always better to be safe than sorry as some injuries may be internal so they aren’t visible to the naked eye. A 911 call will not only dispatch an ambulance but usually the police too.

Stay Calm

It can be pretty difficult to stay calm and keep a level head after an accident, especially when it’s serious, but that’s exactly what your children need. They are going to feel scared, and if they have injuries then they will be that much more distraught. By you staying calm you can help them to remain as still and calm as possible until help arrives.

File a Report with the Police

If you have called 911 then the police will likely be on the scene, so you want to be sure you answer their questions and file an official report. The report will detail such things as the time and place of the accident, the property damage and the injuries incurred.

Hire a Personal Injury Attorney

If you and/or your children have sustained any injuries, you will also want to hire a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. The lawyer will be able to file a claim for compensation which can help you with the recovery process. As for what to ask when hiring an injury lawyer, it's important to ask such questions as their price, how they plan to approach your case, what the expected outcome will be, and how long it will take.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected

One can hope that they will never be involved in a car accident, especially with their kids in the car, but unfortunately accidents can strike at any time. This is exactly why it’s important to be prepared and know what you need to do.
