This isn't about being Latina, or dancing provocatively, or wearing very little clothing. This is about feeling empowered. Tell me, have you ever in your life, worn your cute undies in your room, taken a hairbrush, and rocked out in front of the mirror while no one was looking? And how did it feel? Exactly.
I used to get such a rush from dancing around like a rock star in the privacy of my own home, doing moves that I only had the confidence to show the measly mirror in my bedroom. I can't even imagine how exhilarating and amazing Jennifer Lopez and Shakira felt up on stage, together, performing at the Super Bowl half time show.
There is a lot of hate on the internet about this performance, and I really don't know why. I want my daughters to feel confident enough to get up and do what moves them, to feel powerful and wear whatever clothes make them feel like the queens that they are, and to NOT feel that they have to apologize for it. Women like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are paving the way, breaking down walls, and showing us that "women of a certain age" is a dumb phrase and needs to go home.
So, go take that pole dancing class, wear the mini skirt, drink the extra martini, go out dancing past midnight, dye your hair purple, and sing in your undies at the top of your lungs, while attempting to shake your booty like Shakira and JLo at half time, because we are women, HEAR US ROAR!
