I rescue from our local shelter which will euthanize because of the health of the dog, the temperament of the dog or due to lack of space. A rescue I work with wanted me to pull Mamma J from the shelter, and foster until transport. She was curled up in the corner of the kennel, and avoided all sorts of eye contact and touch. She went to the vet the next day for spay, rabies and health certificate. When I brought her home, she stayed under our bed for the first few weeks, only coming out to potty on the puppy pads or to eat. Slowly she came close enough to us, allowing a short pet. After a few months, she was ready for transport. She was renamed Maggie. I drove her about 1.5 hours north to meet transport, where she would be driven another 3 hours to meet the transport van and be on her way to Wisconsin. At the last loading spot, she pulled out of her collar, and across the interstate she went. When they phoned me on what had happened, I went home, gathered our comforter and drove 5 hours north to where she went missing. No luck finding her, no sightings. Great rescue people up there littered the area with flyers. 3 days later she was caught, albeit after biting the person who caught her. She was thin, covered in briers from the woods. I promptly drove up there, and brought her home, where she is now a part of our family. (I think she got away on transport on purpose so she could stay with us forever)!! :)
